In Things Fall Apart, when does silence occur and what does it mean?

It occurs many times throughout the novel. One particular instance is when Unoka goes into the woods and takes his flute. It is said that there was a profound silence. This means that the community feels his loss, but at the same time, they are greatful that the noise has stopped.
