What is the theme in Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston?

I think the search for self-identity is a major theme in the book. For much of book Janie defines herself by the man she is with. She puts up with abuse and misogyny but is able to come out of these relationships a little more self-aware. By the end of the book Janie has a confidence about her as she walks through town with her head held high.
