He is Janie's second husband and is all about outward appearances. He marries Janie because she enhances his image in town. He is all about status which shows in the way that he dresses and speaks. He does not love Janie, and most likely never did. He manages to do what none have managed to do before....subdue Janie. He oppresses her emtionally and mentally to the point where she is just a shell of her former self.
