In the novel's final chapter , Didion remarks on the presence of Japanese tourists, who were present and taking pictures in St. John's Cathedral on both Quintana's wedding day and the day of John's funeral. Didion sees their presence as a symbol of the way life seems to go...... unaware of the events taking place in the lives of others.
