Asked from the The Woman Upstairs study pack
Nora describes the Woman Upstairs as an unmarried school teacher who is approaching forty without having accomplished anything she set out to do. She is also a ‘dutiful daughter,’ who is a good member of the community, but Nora finds that there is a certain price to be paid, to still be the Woman Upstairs. She is open to nostalgia or regret for her unfulfilled dreams, and this literally puts her in a compromising position in relation to the people whose lives she enters. Under the serene and reliable exterior of the woman upstairs, Nora, or Messud, exposes an ocean of sentimentalities, and a seething set of resentments.
