The book, Witch of Blackbird Pond, is set during the time when the settlers were beginning to wonder if they should still be loyal to the King of England. The character of Kit's Uncle Matthew is a good example of this. He argues for the rights of the colonists to self government. This foreshadows, of course, the coming revolution.
