Jack Winthrop was the older son of John Winthrop and his first wife, Anne. He is described as industrious, smart and kind. Jack's love for his first cousin, Bess, was confusing for him at times, and he married her sister, Martha, for reasons that even he didn't understand.

An important influence in the new world, Jack settled in the area of Connecticut that was known as New London, where he developed mines and other natural resources throughout New England. He was not a political or religious leader, but his wealth and good works in the new world brought him great respect and considerable power. He remained a loyal friend to his cousin, Bess, and he eventually helped her out of more than one life or death situation
