What are the motifs in The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck?

Following the trend is a recurring idea in the story. There is a prevailing opinion expressed by several of the story's characters that unethical behavior can be condoned by virtue of the fact that someone has done it, succeeded through doing it, and therefore it is okay to do it.
