Paulina is loyal to Hermione. After Hermione is accused of adultery, Paulina takes the newborn baby to Leontes in the hope that she can convince him to accept that the child is his. Later, Hermione urges the king to never remarry without her permission, apparently indicating her loyalty to Hermione's memory but perhaps because she knows Hermione is not dead. Paulina either hides Hermione for about sixteen years or she commissions a lifelike statue that she then brings to life.
