Who is The Last Mammoth from The New Way Things Work and what is their importance?

Over the course of the novel, many mammoths are mentioned. By the fifth section, however, only one Mammoth left...... he is referred to as "The Last Mammoth." The last mammoth is described as "tiny brained", gentle, sensitive, and leary of new things.
