Bernard mentions Larpent during a visit to Rome and states they need to have lunch and talk. Woolf alludes to the fact that Larpent is, in fact, the person that Bernard tells his life story to. Bernard notes that Larpent is an acquaintance from school, and that his anonymity is essential for finally freeing Bernard from the expectations of making the perfect phrase.
