How does the author use foreshadowing in The Waves?

In Section Two, Woolf describes the birds as straining for song, foreshadowing the events of the characters' adolescence. Each of the friends are striving to mark themselves out as individuals, but they are forcing the issue rather than letting themselves develop naturally
