In 1969, Pat Conroy was waiting to hear of his acceptance into the Peace Corps, and he was hoping he wouldn't hear from the draft board, which could send him to the war in Vietnam. When no word came from either, he applies for the job at a school on Yamacraw Island off the coast of South Carolina.
