The settings of these stories vary dramatically. Most are set in the continental United States, though some, notably "Cody's Story, appear to take place in Canada. The locales vary from urban, "A Romantic Weekend," and "Chopin in Winter" to suburban, "Home" to rural, parts of "River of Names," for example. A few stories take place in foreign locations: "A White Horse" occurs in India, while "The Things They Carried" is a story about the Vietnam War. Most of the stories take place in the twentieth century, although a few, "Wickedness" and "Daddy Garbage," take place in the nineteenth century. No stories take place before that.
