In the story, Jack and the Beanstalk, Bettelheim notes that the beanstalk is a symbol of Jack's budding masculinity. Bettelheim claims that climbing the beanstalk is the phallic phase, which is ended when Jack successfully climbs the beanstalk and overcomes his oedipal problems.
