What metaphors are used in The Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen William Hawking?

This is a non-fiction book about physics and the universe: there doesn't seem to be any literary metaphors in the book. I suppose the universe can be seen as a metaphor of man's expanding understanding of time and space.
