The majority of the novel is set on the Peace farm in Asheville. Although the state in which Asheville is located is never explicitly mentioned, description leads the reader to believe it is the Asheville located in North Carolina. The farm is located on hundreds of acres of land - woods, swamps, fields, streams, and valleys.
