Who is Cranick from The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and what is their importance?

Cranick is a sailor and a member of the crew. On a prior voyage, he lost his arm due to one of Jaggery's beatings. His purpose in sneaking aboard the Seahawk was to incite rebellion. Cranick dies when Jaggery shoots him.
