The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle

In Ch. 1, the figurehead of the seahawks reminded Charlotte of an avenging angel. How did this appearance support the interpretation in Chapter 21?

In Chapter Twenty-One, Jaggery tries to kill Charlotte while everyone else on board refuses to help, preferring to not involve themselves in the fight between them. The ship, however, plunges into the water just as Jaggery lunges toward her, successfully throwing him overboard and saving Charlotte's life. The ship..... the figurehead, becomes Charlotte's avenging angel.
