In the novel, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Helen records her desire that her husband find worthwhile pursuits..... something other than drinking and idleness. This wish foreshadows the existence of the man she will later fall in love with..... a hard-working farmer, who is also a gentleman in the proper respect.
