The most well-nown leader of the Southern Populist Party, Watson attempted to unite poor whites and blacks in an effort to promote their economic well-being. Watson believed that self-interest motivated men more than any other belief, philosophy or attitude, and that lower class members of both races would come together with that self-interest in mind.
