The people love their king because he puts their needs before his own, and he is a genuinely good person. Unfortunately, his personal relationships affect his good judgement, and as a result, he turns his back on the people he rules. Over the course of the novel, Shahrayer learns to once again see things clearly..... and he not only finds himself but regains the love of his people as well.
