Sugar Cookies represent the refusal of outer reality. The children bring sugar cookies to their Great aunt Lucinda in the asylum. Her refusal to eat the cookies is brought on by her interactions with the faerie world. Lucinda is unable to eat the cookies because she no longer has a taste for any food but the fruit brought to her by the sprites.
