German philosopher and political thinker, Karl Heinrich Marx, is the most influential political philosopher of modern Western society. He co-wrote and published his brief but seminal work, The Communist Manifesto, in 1848. Although it is not specifically stated, the text is generally held to be a direct response to Marx's political theory of the class struggle—a theory today widely known as Marxism.
