Things are getting ready for when the slaves arrive (aboard ship), and teh reader learns more about thPurvis's famiy history. When the slaves arrive Jessie begins to understand just what a job this is going to be (both mentally, emotionally and physically). It is during this chapter that Jessie begins to question his ideas about slavery. This puts him in direct opposition with Purvis, who takes it as a personal insult that Jessie would even question the institution of slavery.
