Matts father instructs him to use sticks to ascertain the time of the family's return. He tells Matt they should be gone around six weeks. If Matt uses each stick for a week, seven notches per sticks, he should begin to look for them when he gets to the seventh stick. The notches, and the sticks, serve as a kind of calendar. In this way, Matt can tally the days.
