Various images recur throughout the entire novel. One of images that is mentioned most often in this book is that of the mask. In fact, just before the hotel is destroyed, Danny realizes that the entity that is the hotel has taken charge of his father and is using Jack as a mask. In an attempt to make Danny understand how completely his father is gone, the hotel makes Jack’s body use the roque mallet to completely destroy his face. When he finishes, Danny recognizes all of the horrors that have plagued him while at the hotel in his father’s face.
