Who is Johnson from The Sea-Wolf and what is their importance?

Johnson is a veteran sailor. A big man, the Swede isn't at all afraid of Larsen and isn't afraid to voice his displeasure. Unfortunately, Larsen doesn't appreciate his negativity and kills him.
