In The Scarlet Letter, why does the narrator call Chillingworth an "unfortunate old man"?

This is how he looks, first of all...broken and bent. However, he is also unfortunate because of his circumstances for the last years (his company had failed, and then when he came to America he was captured by indians and lived as their slave for a while).
