Responsibility is a recurring idea in the story. Morpheus feels responsibility, in his position as King of Dreams. He cares for all those who dwell in the Dreaming, and he presides over all the dreams of mankind in the human world. Morpheus's responsibility separates him from others. He deals with others' problems and disputes but turns to no one to help him with his own problems. Morpheus keeps his own counsel because he is the ultimate authority in his own realm. Morpheus could avoid his fate by breaking the rules of his position or bucking responsibility.
