Stephen is diagnosed with tuberculosis and is sent to live at the family beach house in Tarumi, Japan where he meets Matsu, Sachi, and Kenzo. As the war between China and Japan escalates, he falls in love with a Japanese woman named Keiko. This is cause for much conflict in Stephen's life.
