The "shiny modern rocking horse “is a symbol that shows up at Christmas time. Christmas time, even today, represents the most materialistic time of the year in Western culture. Like the rocking horse, all the other expensive things in the house represent a very unnatural attachment to material possessions. The boy's crazed forging forward on the rocking horse represents society's obsession with material pursuits.
