The imagery in the road is dark, grey, and stark. There is nothing cheerful about it. The fires only highlight the grey disillusion of a dead or dying world. There are charred babies and shadows that never give way to the sun. The only light that exists is seen through the metaphor of the boy: a Christ-figure who has come too late to save the world.
