Ann moves from South Africa to North America in order to escape the oppression in Africa. Her brothers also fled South Africa for political reasons. Still, her father remains begind in jail nine years later because he, in a move that foreshadows John's, sacrifices himself for his sons' freedom and safety. There is neither romance nor a future in the Africa of The River Niger.
