There are very different responses to colonialism. Joshua represents the converted African, he supports the colonialists and assists Livingston in securing power and eventually.... exploiting the people. Waiyaki, on the other hand, utilizes his Western education to "Learn all the wisdom and all the secrets of the white man. But do not follow his vices." Waiyaki works against the white man by playing their own game.
