The Honia River, which is the "river between" flows in between the two rival communities. It also serves as a place unity, in that, the people, animals, crops, and plants depend on the river's water. Both communities also perform their rituals there: while the Christians baptize the faithful in the river, the tribes on the other side celebrate the ritual of circumcision. The river is the novel's central image.
