Clay tablets enabled the Babylonians to record their activities. They were excellent record keepers, who "engraved legends, poetry, history, transcriptions of royal decrees, the laws of the land, titles to property, promissory notes and even letters". Many of these clay tablets were housed in libraries, so they remain intact to this day.

The tablets enable craftsmen, government, land owners to track their income and expenditures. They were the "technology" of their day.
