One major theme in the novel is the separate world of women and men in Biblical times. As children, the girls and boys live as friends and playmates. As adults, the women are isolated and their lives are dictated by fathers and brothers. Life in the red tent is a world of companionship, but it can also be a home to jealousy and conspiracy.
