The loss of innocence a reoccurring idea through the story. Alicia and Jason's sister, Emma are innocent because they are only seven-years-old. Since the characters live in what seems as if it is a small town, murder and other crimes seem foreign to them. In addition, Jason seems emotionally younger than his 12 years.
