Who is The Earl of Hertford from The Prince and the Pauper and what is their importance?

The Earl of Hertford is Edward Tudor's uncle and Lord Chancellor of the realm. After King Henry VIII's death, he also becomes Lord Protector of the young king. The earl is portrayed as a useful friend to the prince, with an unwavering allegiance to the monarchy.
