Who is Humphrey Marlow from The Prince and the Pauper and what is their importance?

Humphrey Marlow is Prince of Edward's whipping boy. His job includes taking beatings for the prince when he fails to perform well at his studies. Humphrey and Tom become very close over the time that Tom believes he is the prince, serving to teach Tom alot about how the court functions.
