Who is Humphrey Marlow from The Prince and the Pauper and what is their importance?

Humphrey Marlow is the Prince Edward's whipping boy. It is his job to take beatings for the prince when he fails to perform as expected. Humphrey becomes Tom's confidant while he is pretending to be the prince.
