The Ponder Heart

do you think that being unmarried ("an old maid") means that a woman's life is over (that she is past redemption)? Cite reasons for your opinion

speaking of Judge Tip Calahan, Edna Earl says "He gives me a little pinch. The day i don't rate a pinch of some kind from a Clanahan i'll know am past redemption as an old maid.

While many believe this to be true, it simply is not. Love is not the sole purpose in life, happiness is, as Kahlil Gibran claims in "Spirits Rebellious".

While some do find happiness in the care and affection they receive from their lovers embrace, it is not the only source of happiness. However, that being said, Edna's characteristics indicate that she is clearly a woman of the former.

Hope this helps :)
