Kino did not own a canoe of his own, actually. The canoe that he ends up with is an old one that has belonged to the men in his family. In essence, he is a pearl diver without a canoe, which makes him a pretty sad character at the beginning, and is created like this on purpose by the author so that the reader will see him with a sympathetic viewpoint. He desperately needs to get pearls so that he can pay for treatment for his child who's been bitten by a scorpion.
