In The Pathfinder by Cooper, the main character (protagonist) is Natty Bumppo. This is the only novel in this entire series of books where the 'pathfinder' falls in love. Unfortunately, she falls for someone else, leaving him to the woodlands that he is more in touch with. He was willing to become something that he was not in order to have her, but in the end, while heartbroken, realizes that it was probably for the best. Hawkeye's observations about this ill fated romance set the tone for the overall theme of the book.
