In the novel, The Outsiders, Ponyboy asks a question about society which underpins the theme of the entire novel. He's saying that it is pathetic how society judges a book by its proverbial cover, never taking the time to see the worth of a person, or their potential.
When ponyboy says a comment of what society judges what he means by that is that the greasers are really different then the socs
