The man's shadow claims that the man is full of self-pity, willing to give up and never be found, and as the man begins to move through a crowd of people symbolizing trees, the man is berated for not being generous and brave during his lifetime. The man's shadow intervenes, and the crowd retreats. The shadow tells the man that it is his heart and drags the now exhausted and feeble man off the stage as the crowd follows.
