Did Mathilde Loisel deserve the punishment she received? Explain your answer

Mathilde brought her punishment upon herself. She borrowed the necklace, she lost it, and she refused to take responsibility and admit the loss to her friend. I empathize with Mathilde, and I wish she had made better choices..... her actions and punishment, however, were of her own doing.
