What is Caroline' role in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd?

Caroline is Dr. James Sheppard's older sister. She lives with Sheppard and awaits his return home everyday in order to fish out as much gossipy information from him as she can. Caroline's unique ability to milk gossip out of most everyone in the community makes her the perfect source of information for Poirot's investigation.
