What is the main conflict in The Monkey's Paw by W. W. Jacobs?

The main conflict surrounds the arrival of Sergeant-Major who brings with him a Monkey's paw from India. The paw has the ability to grant wishes but at a terrible price. Mr. White is sceptical but succumbs to temptation. The results are a nightmare for the White family.
